Heifer International Empowers East African Farmers

An alumnus of The College at Brockport, State University of New York, with a BS in forensic science, Zariq Siddiqui serves as the senior manager of sales operations and strategy at Abbott Laboratories. Besides running full-cycle sales operations for the company’s Pediatric Nutrition Product Division, Zariq Siddiqui is engaged in philanthropy and supports Heifer International.

Farmers in the East African countries of Tanzania and Rwanda are set to gain $4 million from a collaboration between the United Nations’ International Fund for Agricultural Development and Heifer International. The program will see dairy hubs established in both countries to boost farmers’ production of dairy milk by 30 percent, helping them escape poverty.

Heifer International will contribute $2 million to the project while the UN agency will contribute the remaining $2 million. While 50 percent of the funds will go toward constructing five dairy hubs in Zanzibar, Tanzania, the remainder will be used to establish six such hubs in Rwanda.

Besides helping farmers get attractive prices for their dairy products, the hubs will provide help with business management, cow nutrition, disease detection, and milking techniques.
